Like the "hard sayings" of Christ , agape love is the "hard love" of Christ.
It means showing compassion to people who aren't "our kind of people".
A compassion that extends out well beyond family and kin and well beyond the borders of our own nation, race, class , faith and gender.
The ethos of Modernity didn't forbid compassion completely - but it might as well have.
That is because it reduced agape love and even philia love to eros love.
Showing compassion for our kin was acceptable only because it is in our own individual self interest to see that our close kin remain well.
'Loving thy enemies', under Modernity, became 'aiding the enemy' and in an atmosphere of near permanent war hysteria, that was akin to treason.
Offering penicillin to the dying among our enemy was treason....
